WJEC (Wales) AS and A Level Level Mathematics.

The assessment of the WJEC AS and A Level Maths is divided into a total of 4 units, 2 AS units and 2 A2 units.  This allows an element of staged assessment.  Examinations are available in the Summer Series each year.

Unit 1 and Unit 2 will be available in 2018 (and each year thereafter) and the AS qualification will be awarded for the first time in summer 2018.

Unit 3 and Unit 4 will be available in 2018 (and each year thereafter) and the A Level qualification will be awarded for the first time in summer 2018.

(Weightings noted are expressed in terms of the full A Level)

WJEC AS Mathematics

Paper 1 “Pure Mathematics A” will count for 25% of the overall grade and will be 2 hours 30 minutes in duration.

There are a possible maximum of 120 marks which may be set on any part of the subject content of the unit.

A calculator will be allowed in this examination.

WJEC AS Mathematics

Paper 2 “Applied Mathematics A” will count for 15% of the overall grade and will be 1 hour 45 minutes in duration.

There are a possible maximum of 75 marks.  The paper will comprise of two sections:

Section A: Statistics (40 marks)

Section B:  Mechanics (35 marks)

A calculator will be allowed in this examination.

WJEC A Level Maths Assessment

The assessment of the WJEC A Level Maths is based on completing the above papers 1 and 2 along with the  further 2 written papers that are outlined below.

WJEC A Level Mathematics

Paper 3 “Pure Mathematics B” will count for 35% of the overall grade and will be 2 hours 30 minutes in duration.

There are a possible maximum of 120 marks which will assess learners’ understanding of more than one topic from the subject content.

A calculator will be allowed in this examination.

WJEC A Level Mathematics

Paper 4 “Applied Mathematics B” will count for 25% of the overall grade and will be 1 hour 45 minutes in duration.

There are a possible maximum of 80 marks.  The paper will comprise of two sections:

Section A: Statistics (40 marks)

Section B:  Differential Equations and Mechanics (40 marks)

A calculator will be allowed in this examination.
